FG Bans More Loan Apps, Releases Updated List of Prohibited Digital Lenders

The Federal Government (FG) has intensified its crackdown on illegal digital lending platforms by announcing a fresh ban on several loan apps operating across Nigeria. The action, carried out through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), is aimed at protecting Nigerians from harassment, data breaches, and unethical recovery tactics often linked to unlicensed digital lenders.

Why the Loan Apps Were Banned

According to the FCCPC, the affected loan apps were found to be operating without proper regulatory approval or violating consumer protection guidelines. Common complaints against these platforms include:

  • Harassment and public shaming of borrowers
  • Unauthorized access to users’ contact lists
  • Excessive interest rates and hidden charges
  • Data privacy violations

The commission stated that only digital lenders that comply with regulatory standards and obtain approval will be allowed to operate legally in Nigeria.

Updated List of Banned Loan Apps

The government also unveiled an updated list of prohibited digital lending apps. Nigerians are advised to verify the status of any loan platform before borrowing.

The FCCPC maintains a public register of approved digital lenders to help consumers identify legitimate platforms.

Government’s Warning to Nigerians
Authorities urged citizens to avoid downloading or borrowing from unapproved loan apps, warning that such platforms may exploit users through intimidation and illegal debt recovery methods.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing the digital lending space and ensuring that financial technology services operate within the law.

What Borrowers Should Do

  • Confirm if a loan app is registered with the FCCPC
  • Read loan terms carefully before accepting offers
  • Avoid sharing unnecessary personal information
  • Report abusive practices to regulatory authorities
