NCCE Approves 5-Year NCE-to-Degree Programme for Colleges of Education in Nigeria
The National Commission for Colleges of Education has approved the implementation of a Continuous Five-Year NCE–Degree Programme for Colleges of Education operating the Dual Mandate system across Nigeria.
According to the ministerial directives issued on May 5, 2026, the new academic structure will officially commence from the 2026/2027 academic session. The policy is designed to create a seamless transition from the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) to a Bachelor’s degree programme within the same institution.
Under the new arrangement, students will spend three years completing the NCE programme and may proceed directly into a two-year degree programme at 300 Level after meeting the required academic standards.
The initiative is expected to simplify academic progression for students, reduce delays associated with admission processes, and strengthen teacher education in Nigeria. It also reinforces the NCE qualification as the minimum teaching standard while expanding opportunities for higher academic attainment.
The development is considered a major milestone for Colleges of Education nationwide, especially institutions already operating the Dual Mandate system approved by the Federal Government.
Education stakeholders, students, and parents have welcomed the new policy, describing it as a positive step toward improving access to quality teacher education and enhancing professional development within the sector.
The policy is expected to benefit thousands of NCE students and aspirants seeking a more coordinated pathway to obtaining degree qualifications in education-related fields.
Congratulations have continued to pour in for students, lecturers, and stakeholders following the announcement, with many expressing optimism that the programme will contribute significantly to the advancement of Nigeria’s education system.
